Cristeta Comerford: Meet the Filipina Iron Chef of the White House

Cristeta is the Filipina Iron Chef at the White House. She grew up in Sampaloc, Manila having six half-brothers, one half-sister, and three full biologically linked sisters; among of them she is the second from the eleven. She studied at UP-Diliman having a major in Food Technology, but unfortunately her migration to U.S. became the reason of why she did not finish taking up her degree.

That emigration in the U.S. became a stepping stone of Chef Cristeta to start her cooking career. At first she worked being a cooking chef in Chicago’s Sheraton and Hyatt Regency hotels; moved to Washington D.C.to work at the Le Grande Bistro in The Westin Hotel and at The Colonadde in ANA Hotel. She also went to Austria to work as a “revolving chef” in Le Ciel for six months.

Now it came to the moment that she was ‘hired’ to become an assistant chef in the White House by a chef named Walter Scheib. Then, ten years after Chef Scheib resigned; she was pushed to be the executive chef of the White House by First Lady Laura Bush.

Years after, President Obama became the president of America and they could have gone elect another executive chef replacing her, but they chose Chef Cristeta to retain her in the position. Until today she is the head cook in the kitchen of the White House, the first Filipina and minority to hold that position.

In today’s 2013Inauguration of Barack Obama, she totally is in charge of all the “Class A” food in that event.
